We are part of the international L’Arche movement.

L’Arche Canada is a national non-profit organization comprising 30 member L’Arche communities that collaboratively share knowledge and resources with L’Arche communities worldwide.

The Mission of L’Arche is “to make known the gifts of people with intellectual disabilities, revealed through mutually transforming relationships and engage in our diverse cultures, working together toward a more human society.”

The Mission that unifies L’Arche finds its foundation in the unique culture, history, and connections of each individual local community. L’Arche Canada enables the L’Arche communities within Canada to embody this Mission with greater impact, fostering collaboration for collective influence and sharing knowledge, services, and resources.

With its local, national, and international reach, L’Arche uniquely embodies the role of a bridge-builder, fostering knowledge-sharing and collaboration with a wide array of diverse partners across multiple sectors to promote inclusion and a sense of belonging.

Our Location

We are one of 154 communities in 38 countries where men and women — with and without disabilities — live together in shared faith, and with the belief that together they are stronger.

L’Arche Ottawa opened its doors in 1972. Today there are six homes (one temporarily closed) and one day program offering a variety of fun and inclusive activities.

Our History

1964
L’Arche began in France
It was a compassionate response to the plight of people with intellectual disabilities living in grim institutions, shut away from society.
1969
L’Arche Daybreak starts in Richmond Hill, Canada
Canadians Steve and Ann Newroth were so transformed by their experience of L’Arche in France that they began to dream of bringing L’Arche to Canada.
1972
L'Arche Ottawa is founded
In 1972, L'Arche Ottawa began in the national capital region when Maurice and Mary Charbonneau opened Maison Alleluia House with André Grouleau, Monique Houle, Daniel Drouin and a large contingent of supporters.
1973
Finding our home
In 1973, with the help of the Basilian Fathers, L'Arche Ottawa set down roots in the west end of the city where it remains today. Others started to join the community, helping to grow the vision of L'Arche into a movement.
1996
Community relocates
The community was relocated to Ottawa after La Caravane in the Green Valley closed.
1997
25 years of L'Arche Ottawa
More than 450 hearts have been touched through travels to the cottage, sharing meals at the dinner table, singing 'Kumbaya', playing Jeop-ARCHE-dy, celebrating Christmas, honouring those we lost, and sharing love and life along the way.
2022
L'Arche Ottawa turn 50
L'Arche Ottawa has proudly had its doors open for 50 years of sharing, connection, laughter, memories and breaking barriers.
2024
