Identity and Mission

Our Identity is…

  • We are people of different abilities, sharing life in communities belonging to an International Federation.
  • Mutual relationships are at the heart of our journey together.
  • We celebrate the unique value of every person and recognize our need of one another.

Our Mission is to…

  • Make known the gifts of people with intellectual disabilities, revealed through mutually transforming relationships.
  • Foster an environment in community that responds to the changing needs of our members, whilst being faithful to the core values of our founding story.
  • Engage in our diverse cultures, working together toward a more human society.

L’Arche’s Model

L’Arche provides supports for persons with intellectual disabilities to have mutual, caring relationships, a personal journey, a home, meaningful work, daytime activity and belonging in their areas of interest.

Our model:

  • The persons supported and those who support them help each other reach their full potential.
  • L’Arche communities do not exist for themselves alone.
  • Life-sharing breaks down the barriers in the traditional caregiving relationship.
  • Mutual care, respect and compassion transform these relationships.
  • The members participate in and contribute to the life of their families, neighbourhoods, towns and cities, and the faith, cultural, service and recreational organizations where they belong.
  • Each member receives support to grow, attain their goals, and contribute their gifts and abilities.

Our Impact

L’Arche Ottawa is a part of an international federation of 180+ L’Arche communities and projects in development in 38 countries around the world, with over 12,000 members. Together, we work towards a world where people with and without intellectual disabilities live and work together.

L’Arche demonstrates that with friendship, belonging, and the opportunity to contribute their gifts, people with intellectual disabilities flourish and their lives make a difference. They take a variety of valued roles – employees, volunteers, leaders, artists, teachers, friends, and family – contributing to the lives of their families, friends and communities.

Living with difference and vulnerability is challenging, yet L’Arche demonstrates that when all people, including the most marginalized, take their place, society becomes more human – more colourful, welcoming, creative, compassionate, and joyful.
